Symbols On The Baptistry Ceiling
| The Eagle Carrying the Fish in His Talons |

| The fish was used in the early Church as a symbol of
Christ as a means of concealing the truths of our Faith from the
persecutors. The Greek word IXTHUS, fish, was made up of the first
letters of the words, "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior," and thus for a
Christian, a very effective symbol. In time, a smaller fish came to
symbolize a follower of Christ, a Christian. Here, we have the
eagle, representing the great power and majesty of Almighty God dwelling
on high, swooping down upon the river of life below and bearing the
Christian to His home in heaven. This journey of the soul begins
when God's power engulfs it in Baptism. |
