Fr. Charles Watkins – Staff Bio
Fr. Charles comes to us from Our Lady of the Ridge Parish where he served as
Associate Pastor for 3 years. Prior to that time he was in Seminary at
Mundelein where, in the second year of internship, he was assigned to St.
Michael Parish in Orland Park. He was a resident there for six months
learning about life of a large suburban parish under the tutelage of the pastor
and Fr. Bob who was an associate there.
Prior to coming into the priesthood, Fr. Charles had a long career in the
medical field serving as Clinical Administrator for Cardiac Surgery at the
University of Chicago Hospitals, and was in clinical practice as a Physician
Assistant to the chief of the department there. He and Dr. Robert Karp had
come to Chicago in 1983 from the University of Alabama in Birmingham to revive
the struggling Cardiac Surgery Program at U of C. Working in general
cardiac surgery and transplantation over the years helped to redirect Fr.
Charles' vocation interests towards priesthood. He was ordained in 2003.
Fr. Charles grew up in Florence, Alabama, west of Huntsville. He has lived
and worked in Birmingham, Alabama; Los Angles, Marina Del Rey, and in Orange
County California. In addition to his various roles and experiences in
ministry, he claims a somewhat unusual designation as the Liason and
Archdiocesan Chaplain for Traveling Shows. This primarily embraces his
interest in the circus industry of which he has been a part in the past.
Fr. Charles ministers to circus people who come through our area as well as
surrounding states. His ministry also includes the race car circuit,
carnivals, ice shows, and the like... a truly different kind of ministry!
