First Grade Happenings for the Week of December 4th to the 8th

Religion:  Introduce and talk about the Season of Advent.  We will be creating individual  Advent wreaths to help us mark the time we are waiting for the birth of Christ our savior.  Each candle on the wreath represents a different word for the season.

Week 1:  Hope.  Week 2:  Peace.  Week 3: Joy.  and Week 4:  Love.

Second Steps:  We have come to the end of the first unit.  This week we will review the concepts that were talked about.

Reading:  Our new story is “A Time to Sleep” as we read we will be introduced to the concept of close reading.  Close reading happens when students ask and answer specific questions about the current story.  The questions come directly from the reading and the students then go back to the page and read the exact wording that gives the answer.

Spelling/Grammar:  This week’s spelling words contain the “ck” blend.  As the students work with the “ck” blend this week they will see that the blend can only be used at the middle or end of words.  Our words this week are “bed, wet, prod, duck, neck, clock, lick, so, by and backpack.  Last week we began working with initial blends in words.  This week we will continue learning more initial blends.  Last week the students made an initial blend wheel and discovered words that contained the same blend. Look for this wheel to come home.

Writing:  The first graders will continue learning about being a writer.  This week we will start talking about the six traits of writing.  The first trait that will be discussed is that of getting an IDEA of what to write about. If you have not returned the idea sheet that was handed out at conference time please complete it and send it back to school soon.  These papers will be put into your child’s writing folder.  The next trait that the students will learn about is ORGANIZATION.  The students will see how important it is to organize their thoughts for a story so that it makes sense to a person who is reading it.  Finally the third trait for the week will be VOICE.  The students will see that their reader can tell what the writer was feeling as they were writing the story.  Another item that the students will be using as they are writing is the “HELP TENT”.  The help tent is so that the teacher knows who needs help right away and those who can wait and work until the teacher is available.

Math:  The first graders have been learning to solve subtraction problems by bringing the bigger number down to a ten and taking away the remainder.  We will complete the chapter this week.

Science:  As our unit on Living and Nonliving Things continues we will take a closer look at the things animals need to survive.
