First Grade Happenings for the Week of March 12th to the 16th

Religion:  The students will continue to learn more about the Stations of the Cross.  Our practice for the Washing of the Feet Prayer Service continues.  The students are doing a wonderful job.  Please put March 23rd on your calendar so that you are able to attend the 9:00am prayer service.  This week we will also learn about the legend of St. Patrick.

Reading:  This week we begin the second story in the second unit of our new reading series. The story is called “The Recess Queen”.  As we are reading the story the students will use their knowledge of story elements.  They will identify the events that happen at the beginning, middle and end of the story.  As we are reading the new story we will ask and answer questions revolving around what has been read.

Spelling:  This week we will spend time reviewing previous spelling words.  There will not be a spelling test due to the fact that there will not be any school on Friday for the students.

Grammar:  The students will review how to identify the subjects, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in stories.  The will also learn how to compare items.  They will see that when -er is added to the end of an adjective two things are being compared.  When comparing three of more things -est is added to the end of an adjective.

Writing:  We have been spending time the last couple of weeks learning how to put stories in sequential order.  This week the students will write a story about the steps it takes to catch a leprechaun.

Math:  We will continue to write numbers 1 – 120.  The students will learn how to break down number into tens and ones.  As they are drawing these numbers they will be using a vertical line to represent 10’s and x’s to represent 1’s in number.  Look for examples of this to come home to help with homework this week.

Social Studies:  We continue to learn about the effects of weather on land.  This week we will also be talking about the reasons it is important to help out at home as much as possible.  The students will be bringing home a sheet to write information about a chore they do at home and why it needs to be done to help out the family.  This assignment along with 6.4 from Math are both due on Thursday of this week.
