Third Grade News Room 112 Mrs. Reckwerdt for the week of Feb. 12-16th


Religion:   We enjoyed a visit from Deacon Stuart  last week. He explained what a Deacon is, what he does, and the colors of the church. Then Deacon Stuart answered lots of questions from the class.  Students are learning about importance of prayer and the different kinds of prayer in  Chapter 10. They will also be learning about Ash Wednesday and Lent. We will be going to the Ash Wednesday Mass  and receiving ashes  this Wednesday, February 14th.  Mass will be at 9:30 am.   Third grade will be hosting the 9:00 am School Mass on Tuesday,  February 27th. Please join us in prayer if you available. We will also be leading the Stations of the Cross on March 15th at 2:15 pm.  The February prayer will be recited February 29th for room 112 and on March 1st for room 111. 

Math:  Students are continuing to practice division in Chapter 7.  Please make sure your child to spends a few minutes daily to practice both multiplication and division facts.  We will have last Friday’s Simple Solutions quiz on Monday, February 12th and the Chapter 7 division test  will be on Friday, February 16th.

Reading:  In class we starting to read the award winning novel, The Year of Miss Agnes as a whole group. We will be focusing on characterization and how characters affect the sequence of the story.  We will continue to work using context clues  and making predictions.  Students are still reading novels The Wizard of Oz, Henry Huggins, and Run, Billy Run in  small groups.

Phonics:  Students will continue to divide words into syllables and then review the unit skills before the Unit 4 test on Friday, February 16th.  The unit skills include making plurals, forming contractions, adding suffixes to base words and dividing words into syllables.  February poems have been passed out are to be recited on February 26th.  Please have your child practice their selected poem by reciting it you.

Spelling:  Due to the snow day on Friday, students will have the  spelling unit 17 test on  Monday, February 12th. The list words are: friend, very, people, your, after, busy, other, were, should, once, would, sure, little, every, and could.   Students will then begin the review unit 18. The review test will be next  week on Thursday, February 22nd.

Language:   As we continue practicing numerous skills we are especially focusing on verb tenses, pronouns, and sentence editing. There will be a morning worksheet test on Wednesday, February 14th.

Social Studies:  Students have  learned about different community environments including  location, climate, and natural resources  and how they affect the people who live there.  The chapter 5 test  that was to be on last Friday will be on Monday, February 12th.  Students need to continue to research information about their selected President.  The  mobile of the of  president is due on  Wednesday, February  21 st.

Valentines’ Day: Valentines’ Day is this Wednesday.  Students should bring in their decorated Valentines box  on Monday or Tuesday.  There are 18 students in class. Classmate names can be either put on the cards or not.  Either is fine, but if a child brings Valentines he/she must have one for every student. There will be a Valentine party last period of the day. Thank you to all who are coming in to help at the party and to everyone who donated items for the party.

There will be No School on President’s Day,  Monday, February 19th.  Have a wonderful long weekend.
