5th Grade News!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for attending conferences.  It is helpful to hear from you and your student regarding this academic year!

In religion, our focus is the Advent season. The students will  complete bible studies of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, and other biblical figures.  Fifth grade is leading Mass on Friday, December 8th for the celebration the Immaculate Conception.  Come celebrate with us!

In reading, students are reading a short digital chapter book called Washed Up!   We are identifying ways readers identify relationships and interactions in texts.  Students are practicing analyzing quotes, from the story,  to support their thinking and comparing/contrasting characters and settings.  Students are applying these skills independently in Sign of the Beaver.   In spelling, we are reviewing all the spelling patterns in units 1-5.  Students have a unit 6 test on Tuesday, December 5th.  In writing, students will begin to think about topics and ideas for expository (informative) writing.  Students will be narrowing down writing topics and will practice finding reliable resources.

In social studies, both classes have started Chapter 3 and are learning all about the adventures of Marco Polo in Asia and the empires of Mali, Ghana and Songhai in Africa.     The new  year will bring a focus on explorers and the colonies in the New World.

In math, we are taking our Chapter 4 test today.  The Menu project was introduced and is due on December 19th.  Next week, we will begin chapter 5 which teaches division of decimals.  Each week, I will assign two Simple Solutions lessons that will be due on Thursday.  Students may work ahead.

Students built a city or neighborhood to scale when we visited the Chicago Architecture Foundation on our first field trip.  In science, we briefly studied simple machines and students should be working on their inventions.   The intent to invent and Journal log of our invention project are due December 15th!  They will be returned before break so that the students can work on their projects.  I cannot wait to see the finished products!

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.
