The students in Room 116 are connecting their social studies to the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond in reading. It is a great experience to connect their literature experience to social studies.  It is a difficult novel and it may be helpful to read the novel with your child. We are analyzing characters and reviewing how to summarize chapters as we read.   Students in room 117 are reading The Westing Game which is another complex novel.  Students are working hard to study clues and make character observations to try and solve this murder mystery! Both classes will be finishing their novels next week and will be completing books reports that will be due on Monday, May 21st.  In writing, student have written haikus.  We will be ending out poetry unit with voice poetry where students use point of view in order to create a unique poem.

In social studies, we are finishing Chapter 9.  Students have completed notes digitally throughout this chapter.  Students should be using their notes to review and study for the upcoming test which will be on Wednesday, May 16th.  Students are also completing an ABC poster for the Revolutionary War.   This is a review of all important concepts (from Ch. 8 and 9) having to do with Revolutionary War.

In math, we are finishing up Chapter 9 on patterns and graphing. The students have had a lot of practice with this and I think they will do great on their test which is Wednesday, May 16. Each week, we complete two lessons in Simple Solutions to keep all our math skills fresh. After we finish Chapter 9, we will be moving onto Chapter 10 Converting Units of Measure.

In science, we are finishing up Unit 9 on minerals and rocks. We have had a very hands on learning style with this unit, which the students enjoyed! The students have been able to identify different minerals by running different tests with them. They also had an in class project to illustrate the rock cycle, which you may see at our open house on May 20! Our test is on Tuesday, May 15. We will then begin our owl pellet dissection, which the students can’t wait for!

In religion, we have returned to the We Believe book.  Students are learning about faith, hope, and love.  Students will also explore how we are called to live as disciples of Jesus in our daily lives.

Last but not least, please remember the 5th grade service project is collecting cans.  We have been collecting cans throughout the school; however, we can also use cans the students bring from home.  Next time you go to put them in YOUR recycling bin, stop, and put them in a bag for your child to bring to school.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Mrs. Gridelli and Ms. Fleck
