Second-2-None: Week of 5-13-18

Week of 5-13-18

This week in Religion, we focused on prayer. We discussed how prayer keeps us close to God, the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer, and various ways that we can pray.

In Math, we defined equal parts of a shape, found halves/thirds/fourths of a shape, and drew diagrams and used fractions to solve problems. Next week, we will review our final chapter of GoMath and take the test on Tuesday. For the remainder of the year, we will be reviewing second grade math concepts to prepare students for next year.

In Social Studies, we wrapped up our chapter on America’s history and took our test. Next week, we will return to Science (Unit 7). This unit is all about weather. Some essential questions are: How does the weather change? How does the sun heat Earth? What are some weather patterns? How do seasons affect living things? How can we prepare for severe weather?

In Language Arts, we finished our “Favorite Second Grade Memories” project. Students wrote a detailed, six-paragraph explanatory essay to describe their favorite two things from the entire year. Come to Open House on Sunday to check them out in the hallway!

In Phonics, we worked on vowel digraphs: oo, ea, aw, and au. Next week, we will move into vowel diphthongs. In Shurley English, we started Chapter 11. Students learned about possessive pronouns and exclamatory sentences. We can now classify sentences with many different parts of speech! In Spelling, we focused on ear words. Next week, the pattern will be tion words.

Second-2-None: Week of 5-7-18

Week of 5-7-18

This week in Language Arts, we started on a project focusing on students’ two favorite memories from second grade. We began by brainstorming things that we have done throughout the entire year and made a list. Then, we completed a graphic organizer that included a topic sentence, both memories, details about those memories, why we liked those two memories the best, and a closing sentence. Students started conferencing with Mrs. McCartney and Miss Paluch about how to organize their thoughts. Next week, we will begin writing a six-paragraph essay using the information we wrote in our graphic organizers. We will also make a creative art project to go with it!

In Math, we identified/labeled angles and sorted 2-D shapes based on our understanding of sides and vertices. We also found the total number of same-size squares to cover a rectangle using what we know about rows and columns. Lastly, we defined, identified, and labeled fractions (halves, thirds, fourths). Next week, we will continue working with fractions.

In Social Studies, we learned about how our country grew from the few settlements and colonies to what it is today. We learned about Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea. Lastly, we discussed historical figures, like Jackie Robinson, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass, and their impact on our country. Next week, we will review and take a test on the unit.

In Religion, we learned about the pope’s duties and discussed how Catholics around the world practice the same faith, but in different ways. We also practiced singing our Communion songs and receiving the unconsecrated host to prepare for Saturday. Students are beaming with excitement!

In Phonics, we focused on vowel digraphs (oo, au, aw, ea). Students read and wrote words containing these vowel digraphs. This will help them to decode unfamiliar words when reading a text. This week’s newsletter secret is: Blessed Sacrament.

Please remember, students participating in the 10:30 a.m. Mass need to be in the Parish Center by 10:00 a.m. Students in the 1:00 p.m. Mass need to be in the Parish Center by 12:30 p.m. We cannot wait to see all of you on Saturday for First Communion! It will be a wonderful day.

Second-2-None: Week of 4-30-18

Week of 4-30-18

This week in Religion, we discussed what it means to be a member of a parish and how bishops carry on the work of the Apostles. We also practiced singing a song for our First Holy Communion Mass. Lastly, we practiced the proper way of receiving communion so that we are well-prepared for our big day!

In Math, we began Chapter 11. In this chapter so far, we have learned the names of three-dimensional shapes (cube, rectangular prism, cone, sphere, and cylinder) and two-dimensional shapes (quadrilateral, triangle, pentagon, and hexagon). We learned about their attributes, such as sides, edges, vertices, and faces, too. Next week, we will talk about angles and fractions.

In Social Studies, we learned three different Native American groups, the Powhatan, Sioux, and Pueblo. We discussed what they ate, what they wore, what they used for transportation, and the types of homes they built and lived in. We discussed traditions and how the colonies in our country first started. Students learned about people in history such as John Smith and Squanto. This week’s newsletter secret is: colony.

In Reading, we continued with “Disaster Alert.” So far, we have read about floods, tornadoes, sinkholes, and brushfires. Students in 110 created their own “How To” posters, describing how to stay safe in one of these natural disasters and shared it with the class. We are still focusing on the main idea while reading and asking/answering questions based on the text.

In Phonics, we continued our work with vowel pairs. In Spelling, we had words with a silent c. In Shurley English, students in 109 reviewed classifying sentences with pronouns, and 110 took their Chapter 9 Test. Next week, we will begin Chapter 11; several new concepts are taught in this chapter to prepare students for 3rd Grade.

Second-2-None: Week of 4-23-18

This week in Reading, we compared/contrasted three stories with the same theme about where thunder comes from. Next week we are starting “Disaster Alert” and will be focusing on author’s purpose and main idea while reading this nonfiction book.

In Phonics, we learned about vowel pairs that make long a, long e, long i, and long o sounds. Next week, we will continue reading and writing words with vowel pairs. In Spelling, we reviewed words from Units 21-25. Next week, we will return to our normal Spelling routine with Unit 26. In Shurley English, 109 finished up Chapter 9 and took their test, while 110 finished learning how to classify sentences with pronouns. 110 will take their test on Friday, May 4th.

In Math, we took our Chapter 10 test on data. Students also finished a week-long project where they created their own survey question with four answer choices. They then collected responses to their question and created a tally chart, picture graph, and bar graph. Finally, they wrote a data summary based on their findings and made a poster displaying their hard work. Check them out in the hallway! We will move into Chapter 11 next week, which focuses on geometry.

In Religion, we discussed people who serve God, such as us, religious brothers and sisters, priests/deacons, and single/married people. We are continuing to practice for our First Holy Communion in class as well.

In Science, we finished up Unit 6 and learning about changes to Earth, plant and animal products, and natural resources. We will return to Social Studies next week. This week’s newsletter secret is: field trip.

Second-2-None: Week of 4/16/18

Week of 4/16/18

This week in Reading, we read “Seek the Sun,” and discussed the beginning, middle, and end of the story, as well as the moral of the story. Next week, we will several different short stories written by the same author to compare and contrast them.

In Religion, we discussed how Jesus is with the church as we share God’s love and realized that Jesus is with us as we share his peace with others. We also read this week’s Gospel and did a children’s worship bulletin so we know what the reading will mean at Mass. We also discussed our upcoming Communion Retreat and Communion Day.

In Science, we learned about what changes the Earth and decided whether changes can occur quickly or slowly. We learned about geologists as well. We visited the Health Fair on Friday; students learned about various topics related to staying healthy. Ask your second grader about it! Next week, we will wrap up the chapter by learning about natural resources and plant products. 109 will take their test Wednesday, and 110 will take it on Thursday.

In Math, we read, analyzed, and created tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. We also began a project; students created their own survey question with four answer choices. They will collect their data to create a tally chart, picture graph, and bar graph. Then, they will write a data summary to show how they can analyze their graphs. The Chapter 10 Test will be on Thursday. This week’s newsletter secret is: bar graph.

In Shurley English, we classified sentences with subject pronouns. 109 will take their Chapter 9 Test this Thursday, and 110 will take it the following Thursday. In Phonics, we took our test on contractions, making nouns plural, and suffixes. In Spelling, we worked with silent h words; next week, we will review words from Units 21-25, but there will be NO SPELLING TEST!

Remember, Communion banners are due on Monday. We have our mandatory Communion Retreat on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Have a great weekend!

Second-2-None: Week of 4/9/18

Week of 4-9-18

This week in Reading, we finished up The Earth Dragon Awakes. After finishing the story, we summarized the key events that happened throughout the story using a graphic organizer. Next week, we will begin “Seek the Sun.” This is a short story that teaches a moral.

In Religion, we learned the parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We also learned about the Blessed Sacrament and how it’s stored in the tabernacle. This week’s newsletter secret is: tabernacle. Next week, we will continue to learn how we are sent to share God’s love with others.

In Math, we finished Chapter 9 (length in metric units) and took our test. Next week, we will begin Chapter 10. In these lessons, we focus on data. Here are some skills that students will learn: collecting data, reading picture graphs, making picture graphs, reading bar graphs, making bar graphs, and displaying data. Throughout all of the lessons, we will focus on problem solving skills.

In Social Studies, we took our test on government. Students did such a good job showing us how much they knew about city, state, and federal government! Next week, we will return to Science. Unit 6 is about Earth and its resources. Here are the essential questions we will be focusing on: What changes Earth? What are natural resources? How can we classify plant products?

In Shurley English, we learned about subject pronouns and classified sentences with subject pronouns. We also worked with subject-verb agreement rules to determine the correct verb in a sentence.

In Phonics, we reviewed contractions and suffixes. We will begin vowel pairs, vowel digraphs, and diphthongs. In Spelling, we focused on y words, and next week’s focus will be silent h.

Second-2-None: Week of 4/3/18

Week of 4/3/18

This week in Reading, we continued our chapter book, The Earth Dragon Awakes. Throughout the story, we see what the characters went through during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Students have noticed how characters’ viewpoints have changed throughout the story.

In Phonics, we formed new words by adding the suffixes –ful, -less, -ness, -ly, -er, and –est. We used words with these suffixes to complete sentences as well. Next week, we will continue working with suffixes and review singular and plural forms of nouns.

In Shurley English, we started Chapter 9. We classified sentences with article adjectives, subject nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and objects of the preposition. We reviewed parts of speech, then we introduced subject-verb agreement rules. Next week, we will learn about pronouns and classify sentences with pronouns.

In Religion, we reviewed the Liturgy of the Word and its parts, and then moved into the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Next week, we will learn how to share God’s love and peace with others.

In Math, we measured objects to the nearest centimeter and estimated lengths of various objects. We also solved addition and subtraction word problems involving measurements. Next week, we will wrap up the lessons in Chapter 9, which focus on measuring real-life objects in centimeters and meters, estimating lengths, and comparing lengths of objects. Our Chapter 9 test will be on Friday.

In Social Studies, we made an art extension to show the three parts of the federal government: Congress, Supreme Court, and the President. We also learned about monuments, mottos, freedom, and symbols of our country. Next week, we will review the main concepts taught in the unit and take our test on Friday. Then, we will be moving back to Science. This week’s newsletter secret is: a governor leads a state.

Second-2-None: Week of 3/18/18

Week of 3/18/18

This week in Reading, we began the novel, “The Earth Dragon Awakens.” We have been focusing on vocabulary in the book, as well as the sequence of events in the story. After Spring Break, we will finish the novel and focus on characters’ responses to events in the story. In Writing, we wrote a descriptive story focused on the topic, “If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?”

In Phonics, we worked on making singular nouns plural. Students used several rules in various activities to practice this skill. In Handwriting, we moved into capital letters. So far, we know how to do a capital A, O, C, and D. In Spelling, our focus pattern was /ar/ words. Over Spring Break, check out Spelling City to prepare for future words or review past words! In Math, we took our Chapter 8 test on measurement in inches and feet. On this test, we showed how much we knew about estimating, measuring items, and making/reading a line plot to display data. After Spring Break, we will move into measurement in centimeters.

In Religion, we learned about Holy Week and Easter. After Spring Break, we will begin preparing for our First Holy Communion. This week’s newsletter secret is: Easter bunny.

In Social Studies, we learned about the state and federal government. We learned that a governor leads a state and that the president leads the country. Also, we looked at the three branches of government (Congress, Supreme Court, and the President). When we return to school, we will review these concepts and learn about freedom, monuments, and mottos.

Over the break, ask your second grader if they ran out of or are missing any school supplies. Both classrooms are running low on glue sticks, markers, and colored pencils.

Have a safe and happy Spring Break and Easter! We will return to school on Tuesday, April 3rd. We do have 8 a.m. “B” Day Mass on that day.

Second-2-None: Week of 3/12/18

This week in Religion, we focused on the Liturgy of the Word and which parts of the Mass fall under this part. Next week, we will focus on Holy Week and Easter. We are also going to attend an All-School Mass on Monday, Living Stations of the Cross on Thursday, and a Washing of the Feet Prayer Service on Friday.

In English, we wrapped up the chapter and took a test. Students got to show how much they knew about prepositions, other parts of speech, and topics of paragraphs. In Phonics, we continued to work on adding endings to nouns and verbs. We worked with different rules to help us remember when to add -s or -es and if we need to change any letters. In Handwriting, we finished learning all lowercase cursive letters. We will begin uppercase next week!

In Math, we continued measuring and estimating lengths of objects in inches, feet, and yards. We also identified the best uses for a ruler, yard stick, and measuring tape. We will finish and review this measurement unit and take our test on Wednesday. We will finish up the week playing fun math games to review concepts learned so far.

In Social Studies, we took our test on Unit 3. We also began Unit 4, which is all about local, state, and federal government. We will be focusing on the leaders of our city, state, and country and what they do. We will also learn about the different branches of government. Second-2-None: Week of 3/5/18

Week of 3/5/18

This week in Reading, we read City Green. This continued with the our theme of changing the world around us. We focused on the beginning, middle, and end of the story by picking out the main events and writing them in sequential order using a graphic organizer.

In Shurley English, we continued classifying sentences with and without prepositional phrases. We also identified nouns in a sentence as common, proper, singular, or plural. Lastly, we identified the topic of a given paragraph and determined which sentence to eliminate from a paragraph if it does not fit with the topic.

In Phonics, we added inflectional endings, such as –ed and –ing, to verbs. We learned three rules to help us remember when to double the final consonant, when not to double the final consonant, and when to get rid of the final –e. This week’s newsletter secret is: conferences.

In Math, we continued measuring items in inches and working on word problems involving measurements in inches. We also learned how to estimate the length of a given item. Next week, we will continue with inches and learn how they relate to feet and yards. We will also measure more real-life items.

In Religion, we focused on the Apostles’ Creed. Students worked with a partner and were given a line of the Creed. They wrote the line and illustrated a picture to show the meaning of that specific line on a poster.

In Social Studies, we learned about transportation, bartering, and wrapped up with unit with a review. On Monday, we will review some more in preparation for our Unit 3 Test on Tuesday. Students are coming home with their Social Studies books today to study over the weekend. They should be returned to school on Tuesday morning.

Second-2-None: Week of 2/26/18

Week of 2-26-18

This week in Reading, we finished up Change Makers. We focused on identifying the main idea and topics on various pages. We also created questions based on the text and answered them as a class. Next week, we will read City Green.

In Shurley English, we identified the part of speech for words in a sentence and worked on identifying the topic within a paragraph. We also discussed supporting and non-supporting sentences in paragraphs.

In Phonics, we worked on contractions and changing nouns from singular to plural. We discussed the various rules, such as adding –s and –es.

In Math, we wrapped up Chapter 7, which was about money and time. Now, we are on Chapter 8; this chapter focuses on measurement. Next week, we will begin using our rulers in class and for the homework. This week’s newsletter secret is measurement.

In Social Studies, we learned about goods, services, consumers, and producers. We talked about savings and checking accounts and how we can earn an income to either spend or save.

In Religion, we learned about the Liturgy of the Word. Next week, we will learn about the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Second-2-None: Week of 2-20-18

Week of 2-20-18

This week in Reading, we started a new book, Change Makers. This book is about different kids and teenagers around the world who invented items and made plans to change the world. So far, we have read about a boy who invented batteries and generators to help power a village in Africa and two girls who encouraged the Girl Scouts to stop using palm oil in their cookies because it was harming orangutans’ homes. We focused on identifying the main idea and details within the text, as well as identifying various cause and effects in the chapters read so far.

In Shurley English, we have been working on classifying sentences with prepositional phrases. We also began identifying nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions in sentences. Next week, we will focus on identifying the topic in a given list of words or paragraph.

In Phonics, we worked on contractions. 110 had a “Contraction Hunt,” where they worked with a partner to find contractions in books around the room. They had a lot of fun with this! Next week, we will continue contractions and introduce plural and inflectional endings.

In Math, we worked on telling time to the nearest five minutes. We also introduced phrases like “half past” and “quarter past” as well. Over the weekend, ask your child what time it is if you have an analog clock! Next week, we will continue with time. This week’s newsletter secret is… tick tock.

In Science, we took our Unit 5 Test on adaptations and how plants and animals need one another. Next week, we will start Unit 3 in Social Studies. This unit focuses on goods and services in our community, factories, taxes, trade, barter, and transportation.

In Religion, we reviewed some parts of the Mass and focused a lot on the Stations of the Cross. 109 did a fun packet of the Stations, while 110 made posters for each station.

Second-2-None: Week of 2-12-18

Week of 2-12-18

In Reading this week, we finished up the novel, Charlotte’s Web. Throughout the entire novel, students worked on identifying character traits and finding text evidence to support their claims. We also ended the week by going to see the play version of the story! Students had a great time seeing the characters on stage. Next week, we will compare and contrast the book and the play.

In Shurley English, we wrapped up Chapter 6. In this chapter, we focused on classifying sentences with and without prepositional phrases. We continued determining if nouns are common/proper and singular/plural. Next week, we will begin Chapter 7.

In Phonics, we took our Unit 4 test, which was on words with –le, hard and soft c and g, consonant blends, y as a vowel, consonant digraphs, and r-controlled vowels. Next week, we will begin Unit 5, which is about contractions, plural endings, and inflectional endings (i.e. –ed, -ing).

In Math, we continued finding the values of coins and bills over and below $1.00. Next week, we will work on word problems involving coins and start to tell time to the nearest five minutes.

In Religion, we learned about Lent and Ash Wednesday. Students learned the symbols of Lent, the number of days in Lent, and what we as Catholics should do during Lent. This week’s newsletter secret is…President’s Day.

In Science, we reviewed Unit 5, which included how plants and animals need one another, adaptations, and how environments can change over time. 109 will have their Unit 5 test on Tuesday, and 110 will take it on Wednesday. We will then move back to Social Studies the following week.

In Spelling, we focused on the /k/ sound as “k” or “ck.” Next week, the spelling pattern will be the /er/ sound as “er,” “ir,” or “ur.”

Second-2-None: Week of 2/5/18

We hope everyone had a safe snow day! Because of the day off, we will have our Spelling test on Monday, February 12th. The Cursive Worksheet and Math 7.2 Homework will also be due on Monday, February 12th.

This week in Religion, we focused on the parts of the Mass and how we can participate during Mass now and as we get older. In Math, we took our Chapter 6 Test, where students demonstrated how much they knew about adding and subtracting three-digit numbers! This is a concept we will continue to review for the rest of the year in daily activities and Simple Solutions. We started Chapter 7; this chapter focuses on counting coins to find their value. So far, we have learned how to skip count to find the value of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Please encourage your child to use this skill in their daily life (i.e. going through the drive through and finding the change needed or counting out change in the couch). In Science, we continued Unit 5, learning about adaptations in plants and animals. Students are now able to explain what an adaptation is and can give examples in both plants and animals.

In Spelling, we focused on long u words this week. This week’s newsletter secret to tell us on Monday is: snow day. In Shurley English, we continued working on classifying sentences with prepositional phrases. We practiced our jingles and reviewed common/proper and singular/plural nouns. We have also been reviewing and practicing editing sentences to look for capitalization and punctuation mistakes. In Phonics, we reviews r-controlled vowels, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs. We will be having a test on this next week. In Handwriting, we learned a few more lowercase cursive letters and have been able to write simple words on homework using what we know so far. In Reading, we continued Charlotte’s Web in preparation for our field trip to see the play. The skill we have been focusing on is identifying main characters and thinking of traits to describe them. We are them coming up with pieces of evidence from the text to support our claims. Our vocabulary is expanding with various adjectives and synonyms for traits!

Second-2-None: Week of 1/29/18

Week of 1-29-18

In Religion, we worked on several puzzles to decode Jesus’s message to us as disciples. We also learned how Jesus displays his love for us all the time. Students listened to Sunday’s Gospel reading and completed a Worship Bulletin.

In Math, we wrapped up Chapter 6, which focused on three-digit addition and subtraction. For Groundhog’s Day today, we solved a math mystery focusing on previously learned skills. Next week, we will review the concepts learned in Chapter 6 and take our test. This week’s newsletter secret is: sum and difference.

In Science, we started Unit 5. This unit will focus on the following essential questions: How do plants and animals need one another? How are living things adapted to their environment? Can plants survive in different environments? How do environments change over time? We will continue with the lessons next week. Our Sammy Soils are beginning to grow! This project will help us to remember the five basic needs of plants.

In Reading, we started Charlotte’s Web. This is in preparation for our field trip in a few weeks. Students have enjoyed learning about some characters and have been working on describing them using evidence, and citing text evidence to support their ideas. Next week, we will begin reading Chapter 6 and learn more about the plot. After our trip, we will be able to compare and contrast the text to the play!

In Shurley English, we classified sentences with adverbs, nouns, adjectives, article adjectives, verbs, and prepositions. Although the sentences we classify have become longer and more detailed, students have impressed us each and every day!

Next week, we will return to our normal Spelling routine, and the focus sound will be long u.
