Second-2-None: Week of 10/10/17

Week of 10-10

This week in Reading, we wrapped up “Friends around the World.” We strengthened our ability to identify the main idea in a text and find supporting details about the main idea. We loved learning about the characters Akiak, Isabel, Hau, and Dan, and all of their different homes around the world!

In Shurley English, we started classifying declarative sentences, and we introduced a new vocabulary word, audience. Next week, we will continue working with declarative sentences and identifying article adjectives, adverbs, verbs, adjectives, subject nouns, and verbs within sentences.

We had our seventh Spelling test today on soft c words. Next week, the pattern is words with soft g sounds. Remember to practice spelling words on Spelling City! The website is www.spellingcity.com/mccartney109.

In Math, we started Chapter 3, which is all about addition and subtraction facts. We started to learn different addition strategies, like counting on, using double facts, making a ten, and changing the order of addends. Next week, we will learn grouping numbers as an addition strategy, and counting back and thinking of a missing addend as subtraction strategies.

In Religion, we learned all about Confirmation. We learned how the gift of the Holy Spirit is sealed within us during Confirmation, and about what actually happens at Confirmation. Next week, we will learn about God’s love. Remember, the Act of Contrition needs to be memorized by November for Reconciliation! Please practice it at home.

In Social Studies, we reviewed the three types of communities: rural, urban, and suburban. We also learned that we live in a city, which is a part of a state, which is part of a country, which is on a continent. Room 110 made a neat project to help us remember all of those places, and 109 will make it next week!

Second-2-None: Week of 10-2-17

Week of 10-2

This week in Reading, we started to read “Friends around the World” and learned about e-pals. We began identifying the main topic and supporting details within the next, and next week we will learn how to use captions and key words to better understand a text.

In Shurley English, took a test on Chapter 3, where we classified sentences with article adjectives, subject nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. Next week, we will continue working with those parts of speech, but look at end marks in sentences as well.

In Math, we took our Unit 2 test. We showed how much we knew about number names, showing different forms of numbers, counting on and back by ten and one hundred, and comparing numbers. We will start Unit 3 on Tuesday; we will be working on doubles facts, addition facts, making a ten to add, and relating addition and subtraction.

In Religion, we learned all about Baptism. Through baptism, we are freed from Original Sin and are given grace. We discussed what our own baptisms might have been like and who our godparents are. Next week, we will study the sacrament of Confirmation in depth.

In Social Studies, we learned about laws, votes, and communities. We compared and contrasted the three types of communities: urban, suburban, and rural. Next week, we will learn about our state and country, as well as how our country is a part of the world.

Second-2-None: Week of 9/25/17

Week of 9-25

This week in Reading, we wrapped up the first module with “Trouble at the Sandbox” and “Snowshoe Hare’s Winter Home” by writing our own narrative using the characters from “Trouble at the Sandbox” and using words like first, then, next, and last. Next week, we will read and dig deeply into “Friends around the World”

In Shurley English we learned how to classify and build sentences with a subject noun, verb, adjectives, and adverbs. We learned many new adverbs to answer the questions How? When? and Where? and new adjectives to answer the questions Which one? What kind? and How many?

In Math, we learned how to write number names, show different forms of numbers, and count on and back by ten and one hundred. Next week, we will continue working on counting on and back by tens and hundreds. Also, we will learn about number patterns and comparing numbers.

In Religion, we learned how to celebrate God’s love and what the sacraments are. Next week, we will dive into the sacrament of Baptism and learn how we become children of God and members of the church. We will then focus on Confirmation.

In Science, wrapped up Unit 2 and took a test on the design process, technology and its effects, and how we can improve technology. Next week, we will start Unit 3, which is all about animals! This will include animal needs, kinds of animals, life cycles, and fossils.

Second-2-none: Week of 9/18/17

Week of 9-18

This week in Reading, we read “Snowshoe Hare’s Winter Home.” We learned about what different animals do during the winter time; some hibernate, some find new homes, and some change colors and just play in the snow like Snowshoe Hare and his friends! Next week, we will compare “Trouble at the Sandbox” and “Snowshoe Hare’s Winter Home.”

In Shurley English we learned how to classify and build sentences with a subject noun, verb, and adverb(s). We learned many new adverbs to answer the questions How?, When,? and Where?. Next week, we will look at adjectives and how to use them in our writing.

We had our fourth Spelling test today on wh words. Next week, the pattern is words with ph sounds. Remember to practice spelling words on Spelling City! The website is www.spellingcity.com/mccartney109.

In Math, we learned how to group tens as hundreds, explore and model 3-digit numbers, and describe the values of digits in numbers up to 1,000. Next week, we will learn how to write number names, show different forms of numbers, and count on and back by ten and one hundred.

In Religion, we learned what a disciple is and who the Apostles are. We also learned about the Resurrection, Pentecost, and the Church. Next week, we will see how to celebrate God’s love and what the sacraments are.

In Science, we used our knowledge of the design process to find a solution to a problem. We defined technology and discovered how it influences our daily lives. Technology can be anything that engineers have designed to solve a problem! Next week, we will think about how we can improve technology, design and draw our own roller coaster, and review/test Unit 2.

Second-2-None: Week of 9/12/17

Week of 9-12

This week in Reading, we finished up “Trouble at the Sandbox.” We learned about point of view, how to use illustrations to better understand the story, and how to identify characters’ changing perspectives. Next week, we will continue analyzing the book as a whole.

In Shurley English we practiced classifying short, two-word sentences with a subject noun and verb. We also introduced the adverb jingle and learned how to classify adverbs in a sentence.

We had our third Spelling test today on silent k words. Next week, the pattern is words with wh sounds. Remember to practice spelling words on Spelling City! The website is www.spellingcity.com/mccartney109.

In Math, reviewed skills learned in Chapter 1 and took a test. We ended the week learning and playing fun math games! Next week, we will start Chapter 2, where we will group tens as hundreds, explore and model 3-digit numbers, and describe the values of digits in numbers up to 1,000.

In Religion, we learned why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. We learned the meaning of disciples and Apostles, and how we can relate to them. Next week, we will learn more about how the Holy Spirit helps the church grow and take a test on Chapter 2.

In Science, we learned the steps of the design process. Next week, we will use what we know about the design process to find a solution to a problem. We will also define technology and discover how it influences our daily lives.

Second-2-None: Week of 9/5/17

Week of 9-5

This week in Reading we started reading “Trouble at the Sandbox” and discussed characters and how they respond to story events and challenges, as well as the setting details and major/minor events in the chapters. Through discussion and graphic organizers, we have loved learning more about Josh, Izzy, and Theo in the first four chapters of the book!

In Shurley English we began learning how to classify short, two-word sentences. We began with a subject and a verb (We say: Dogs bark. What barks? Dogs, subject noun. What is being said about dogs? Dogs bark, verb).

We had our second Spelling test today on silent w words. Next week, the pattern is words with silent k. You may have noticed our list has 2 phonetic words, 6 that follow the pattern, and 2 challenge words. Remember to practice spelling words on Spelling City!

In Math, we have continued working with place value.  We solved word problems using tens and ones, found patterns in word problems to show understanding of place value, and began counting by ones, fives, and tens. Next week, we will review skills learned in Chapter 1 and take a test. We will end the week learning and playing fun math games!

In Religion we reviewed how Jesus is Divine and the meaning of the Holy Trinity. We also compared the Holy Trinity to the parts of an apple; each part of an apple (the core, peel, and flesh) has a specific purpose, but they are all completely one apple. This is just like how God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are each unique, but all completely one in God.

In Science, we learned inquiry skills and the steps of a scientific investigation. Next week, we will discover how we can use technology to solve problems.

Reminder, there is no school on Monday, September 11th. Picture day is Tuesday, September 12th. Have a GREAT three-day weekend!

Second-2-None: Week of 8-28-17

What We Are Learning

Week of 8-28

This week in reading we saw a short film called “Partly Cloudy” and talked about the characters. We looked at what made them unique, as well as what qualities these characters had that made them a good friend. Then we looked at ourselves. What makes us unique? What do we want in a friend? This gave way to a great discussion.

In Shurley English we began learning about different punctuation and capitalization rules.  We will be using these rules throughout the year not only in grammar but in our daily writing as well.  Next week in Shurley we will begin learning how to classify short 2 word sentences.  We will begin with a subject and a verb (Dogs bark.)

We had our first Spelling test today. Next week, the pattern is words with silent w. You may have noticed our list has 2 phonetic words, 6 that follow the pattern and 2 challenge words. Next week, we will incorporate a silent b word into the test.

In Math we have been working with place value.  We learned how to expand 2 digit numbers into tens and ones.  Next week we will continue breaking apart 2 digit numbers.

In Religion we learned how Jesus is Divine.  We talked about a few of Jesus’ miracles.  Each Friday we complete a Worship Bulletin.  We read through Sunday’s Gospel and talk about its meaning.  This is a great opportunity to talk with your child about Mass.  Feel free to work on the unfinished Worship Bulletins that are sent home.  They do not need to be returned to class.

Second-2-None: Week of 8-22-17

WELCOME BACK!

One week down…lots to go!  This week was great! Thank you for a great first week back to school.

Second grade is filled with so many new and exciting things to learn.  Each week, please be sure to check the newsletters, homework page, and events page found on the Saint Cletus Website.  (Homework will start on Monday.) We update these pages often with new information.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email or call. Second-2-None Newsletter 5-29

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-29

This week in reading we continued with Splish, Splash, Animal Baths.  While reading we looked for words with vowel pairs.  In Phonics we began our new unit on long vowel sounds o and i.  And in Shurley English we classified sentences by practicing all of the skills we have learned.

In Math we are working with 2 dimensional shapes.  We have been classifying shapes based on vertices, edges, and faces. This week’s newsletter secret is We are Almost 3rd graders!

Our religion chapter this week was about Catholics around the world. We learned about the Pope and how people practice the same faith in different ways.

We are really enjoying our Science unit on animals and their environments.  We have learned how plants and animals adapt to meet the needs of the environment.

Second-2-None Newsletter 5-22

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-22

This week in our language block we continued with vowel teams, decoding syllables, and story elements.  We have a pretty good understanding of breaking up longer words into syllables to help us read them correctly.  In Shurley we practiced classifying our stretched sentences by labeling the subject pronouns. And in Phonics we wrapped up the unit with a suffix quiz.

In Math we started our new chapter on 3 dimensional shapes.  This week’s newsletter secret is all squares are rectangles. We are looking at each shape’s characteristics and we are sorting shapes based on the edges, vertices, and faces.  This week we also played a few family math games.  We hope that you too are enjoying playing these games as a family.

Our Science this week focused on adaptation.  We learned about how plants and animals adapt to survive in their environment.

Religion was about being called as a member of the church.  We talked about Christians today compared to Christians from Jesus’ time.  Next Wednesday is a B day and we will be attending 8 AM Mass.

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-15

This week in reading we read a fictional text about a spade foot toad call Dig, Wait, Listen.  While reading we thought about the author’s purpose of writing.  We learned how authors write to entertain, inform, and persuade.

In Shirley English we rocked out to 2 new songs.  We learned about pronouns and subject pronouns.  We also learned about finding the verb based on whether the noun is singular or plural.  Plural nouns always have a verb without an s and singular nouns have verbs with an s (Dog barks.  or Dogs bark.)

In Math we have been working with collecting data.  We created our own bar graphs and pictographs.  We will be taking our math test on data next Tuesday.

This week’s Religion was about serving God.  We discussed how different groups  can all serve God in the same way.  This week’s newsletter secret is…3 day weekend.

Now that our Social Studies presentations are complete we have moved on to a new Science chapter.  This chapter is about animals and their environment.  We began the chapter by talking about how animals use their environment to survive and the adaptations that sometimes need to be made.

In Phonics we continue with adding suffixes to base words.  It is very important to remember all of our rules before adding new suffixes.

Next Friday, May 26th is a dress down day.

Second-2-None Newsletter

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-8

This week in reading we read Nutik, the Wolf Pup.  This is about a strong friendship between a young boy and his wolf pup.  While reading we looked for suffixes.  We were also using the text to find clues to help us make inferences.

In Phonics we continue with adding the suffixes ed, ing, ful, and ness.  This is a tough skill for many and we will continue working on it until the end of the year.

In Math we started our new unit on Data.  We began by creating tally charts and also learned about reading and creating pictographs.  We will continue with this unit next week as well.

It was so much fun to learn about our Goods and Service projects.  We had a great time presenting our boxes to our peers.  Next week we will have a few more presentations.  Our chapter on Government is complete so we will begin a new Science unit next week.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for May Crowning on Monday.  We have been working very hard to prepare everyone for this special time.  This week in Religion we were learning about people who are called to serve God.  We will continue with this chapter next week. This week’s newsletter secret is…I love my mom!

Second-2-None Newsletter

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-1

This week in reading we read Farfallina and Marcel.  This is a cute fictional story about 2 unlikely friends.  While reading we located details from the text to help us make inferences.

In Phonics we have been adding the suffixes ing and ed.  This is a challenge because there are several rules that we have to remember.   We know about doubling our consonants, dropping the silent e, and just adding the suffix. This week’s newsletter secret is… May is the month of Mary.

In Math we are wrapping up our metric measurement unit.  Our test will be early next week.

The Goods and Service projects look great.  We are looking forward to presenting our projects to the class.  We will begin presentations next week.  Room 109 will be having their Government test mid week and Room 110 will have their test at the end of next week.

During Religion we continue practicing and preparing for First Communion and May Crowning.

Week of April 24

During our language block this week we read a Time For Kids article called Super Croc.  While reading we thought about adding prefixes and suffixes to base words and determining their new meaning.  In Phonics we continued with making contractions.

In Grammar we practiced our new vocabulary card and worked with classifying sentences.  We wrapped up our chapter on topics and main idea.

This week’s math was all about metric measurement.  We have been estimating with centimeters and unit cubes.  We will continue with metric measurement next week.

Our Social Studies chapter focused on government.  We have been learning the roles of the different members of the government.  We will soon be talking about the 3 branches of government.  Wednesday, May 3rd is our due date for The Goods and Services project.  We are really looking forward to seeing everyone’s work.

In Religion we are preparing for our upcoming First Communion.  This week’s newsletter secret is…First Communion is on Saturday!

Second-2-None Newsletter 4-10

What We Are Learning

Week of 4-10

This week in our language block we about contractions, closed syllables, and sequencing events. This week’s newsletter secret is…First Communion is quickly approaching!

In Math we wrapped up our chapter on measurement but will continue with metric units when we return from break.

Our new Social Studies unit is on Government.  We have talk about local government and will learn about the 3 branches of Government when we return.  Please have your child get started on our new Goods and Services project.  We really look forward to seeing everyone’s creative work!

This week’s religion was all about the Triduum.  We discussed the importance of the Three Days and learned the meaning of the color red during this time.
