What We Are Learning

Week of 5-29

This week in reading we continued with Splish, Splash, Animal Baths.  While reading we looked for words with vowel pairs.  In Phonics we began our new unit on long vowel sounds o and i.  And in Shurley English we classified sentences by practicing all of the skills we have learned.

In Math we are working with 2 dimensional shapes.  We have been classifying shapes based on vertices, edges, and faces. This week’s newsletter secret is We are Almost 3rd graders!

Our religion chapter this week was about Catholics around the world. We learned about the Pope and how people practice the same faith in different ways.

We are really enjoying our Science unit on animals and their environments.  We have learned how plants and animals adapt to meet the needs of the environment.

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-22

This week in our language block we continued with vowel teams, decoding syllables, and story elements.  We have a pretty good understanding of breaking up longer words into syllables to help us read them correctly.  In Shurley we practiced classifying our stretched sentences by labeling the subject pronouns. And in Phonics we wrapped up the unit with a suffix quiz.

In Math we started our new chapter on 3 dimensional shapes.  This week’s newsletter secret is all squares are rectangles. We are looking at each shape’s characteristics and we are sorting shapes based on the edges, vertices, and faces.  This week we also played a few family math games.  We hope that you too are enjoying playing these games as a family.

Our Science this week focused on adaptation.  We learned about how plants and animals adapt to survive in their environment.

Religion was about being called as a member of the church.  We talked about Christians today compared to Christians from Jesus’ time.  Next Wednesday is a B day and we will be attending 8 AM Mass.

Week of 5-15

This week in reading we read a fictional text about a spade foot toad call Dig, Wait, Listen.  While reading we thought about the author’s purpose of writing.  We learned how authors write to entertain, inform, and persuade.

In Shirley English we rocked out to 2 new songs.  We learned about pronouns and subject pronouns.  We also learned about finding the verb based on whether the noun is singular or plural.  Plural nouns always have a verb without an s and singular nouns have verbs with an s (Dog barks.  or Dogs bark.)

In Math we have been working with collecting data.  We created our own bar graphs and pictographs.  We will be taking our math test on data next Tuesday.

This week’s Religion was about serving God.  We discussed how different groups  can all serve God in the same way.  This week’s newsletter secret is…3 day weekend.

Now that our Social Studies presentations are complete we have moved on to a new Science chapter.  This chapter is about animals and their environment.  We began the chapter by talking about how animals use their environment to survive and the adaptations that sometimes need to be made.

In Phonics we continue with adding suffixes to base words.  It is very important to remember all of our rules before adding new suffixes.

Next Friday, May 26th is a dress down day.

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-8

This week in reading we read Nutik, the Wolf Pup.  This is about a strong friendship between a young boy and his wolf pup.  While reading we looked for suffixes.  We were also using the text to find clues to help us make inferences.

In Phonics we continue with adding the suffixes ed, ing, ful, and ness.  This is a tough skill for many and we will continue working on it until the end of the year.

In Math we started our new unit on Data.  We began by creating tally charts and also learned about reading and creating pictographs.  We will continue with this unit next week as well.

It was so much fun to learn about our Goods and Service projects.  We had a great time presenting our boxes to our peers.  Next week we will have a few more presentations.  Our chapter on Government is complete so we will begin a new Science unit next week.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for May Crowning on Monday.  We have been working very hard to prepare everyone for this special time.  This week in Religion we were learning about people who are called to serve God.  We will continue with this chapter next week. This week’s newsletter secret is…I love my mom!

What We Are Learning

Week of 5-1

This week in reading we read Farfallina and Marcel.  This is a cute fictional story about 2 unlikely friends.  While reading we located details from the text to help us make inferences.

In Phonics we have been adding the suffixes ing and ed.  This is a challenge because there are several rules that we have to remember.   We know about doubling our consonants, dropping the silent e, and just adding the suffix. This week’s newsletter secret is… May is the month of Mary.

In Math we are wrapping up our metric measurement unit.  Our test will be early next week.

The Goods and Service projects look great.  We are looking forward to presenting our projects to the class.  We will begin presentations next week.  Room 109 will be having their Government test mid week and Room 110 will have their test at the end of next week.

During Religion we continue practicing and preparing for First Communion and May Crowning.

Week of April 24

During our language block this week we read a Time For Kids article called Super Croc.  While reading we thought about adding prefixes and suffixes to base words and determining their new meaning.  In Phonics we continued with making contractions.

In Grammar we practiced our new vocabulary card and worked with classifying sentences.  We wrapped up our chapter on topics and main idea.

This week’s math was all about metric measurement.  We have been estimating with centimeters and unit cubes.  We will continue with metric measurement next week.

Our Social Studies chapter focused on government.  We have been learning the roles of the different members of the government.  We will soon be talking about the 3 branches of government.  Wednesday, May 3rd is our due date for The Goods and Services project.  We are really looking forward to seeing everyone’s work.

In Religion we are preparing for our upcoming First Communion.  This week’s newsletter secret is…First Communion is on Saturday!

Week of 4-10

This week in our language block we about contractions, closed syllables, and sequencing events. This week’s newsletter secret is…First Communion is quickly approaching!

In Math we wrapped up our chapter on measurement but will continue with metric units when we return from break.

Our new Social Studies unit is on Government.  We have talk about local government and will learn about the 3 branches of Government when we return.  Please have your child get started on our new Goods and Services project.  We really look forward to seeing everyone’s creative work!

This week’s religion was all about the Triduum.  We discussed the importance of the Three Days and learned the meaning of the color red during this time.

What We Are Learning

Week of 4-3

This week in our language block we worked with making and confirming predictions, digraphs, bossy r, and irregular nouns.  We will be having a phonics test next week.  In Shurley English we created a new vocabulary card.  We started a new skill on finding the main idea.  We also are looking at list of words and deciding which topic doesn’t belong.  This will help us keep organized with our weekly journal writing.

We reached the mid point of our measurement chapter in math this week.  We will be taking our test on Thursday of next week.

Our Science unit on plants came to an end as well.  We will start a new Social Studies unit next week on Government.  This week’s newsletter secret it…There are 12 inches in one foot. Also, your child will be bringing home directions for an at-home assignment for Social Studies.  Please keep a look out for our Goods and Service Project.

Thank you for spending time with us during Family Math!  Games were all sent home so we hope you enjoy playing them with your child!

Second-2-None Newsletter 3-27

What We Are Learning

Week of 3-27

This week in Reading we read The Tiny Seed.  This is an informative fiction story.  While reading we thought about drawing conclusions from the facts that we found in the text.  We also looked closely at breaking words apart by their syllables.

We finished our Monster Match story writing this week.  We exchanged our papers with the other second grade classroom.  It was interesting to see how well our pictures matched up.  We learned that we really have to take our time when writing details to ensure that the reader understands what we are saying.  You should volunteer for lunch duty and check out the stories and drawings hanging in the hallway! (hint hint) 😉

This week in Religion we attended Living Stations performed by the 8th graders.  They did an excellent job and really helped us understand the stations more clearly.  In our text we continue learning about the parts of the Mass.  We talked about The Eucharistic Prayer and learned how this prayer is the most important prayer of Mass.  Next week you should complete chapter 5 in the Eucharist Booklet.

We will be wrapping up Science on plants late next week.  Look for the chapter to be sent home for review before the test.

We hope you enjoyed Family Math.  It was great fun teaching you all the games that we have been learning in class.  We will be sending home games next week with directions and hope that you find time to play them with your child.  This week in math we started our lesson on Measurement.  We began by using units of measurements like blocks and homemade rulers.  We will be using real rulers next week.

Second-2-None Newsletter 3-20

What We Are Learning

Week of 3-20

This week in reading we took a break from our series and had a unit test.   We are beginning unit 5 next week.

We had a great time being creative with our descriptive writing this week.  Both classes created a silly monster and wrote a paper describing how to draw the monster.  We will be exchanging our papers with the other second grade class next week to see how well we did.

In Phonics we are working with digraphs.  This is something we will continue until the end of the year.

Since Family Math is right around the corner, we took a break from our normal math routine and worked on games all week long.  We look forward to teaching them to you on Friday, March 31st at 10 AM for Family Math.

Saturday, April 1st is the Spring Auction.  Both classes have created awesome class projects.  We hope you check them out and let the bidding begin!

Our Science unit is all about Plants.  We are learning about plant needs and characteristics.  Our newsletter secret is…Jesus rose to new life on Easter.

In Religion we talked about the second part of Mass, The Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Please continue completing your Eucharist book with your child each week.  Chapter 4 is due on Tuesday, March 28th.

What We Are Learning

Week of March 13

This week in Reading we read Mice and Beans.  While reading we thought about story elements, inflection endings, and fantasy and reality.

In phonics we are working with consonant digraphs.  This week’s newsletter secret is.. in a consonant digraphs the sounds change.

Shurley English continues with classifying sentences with prepositional phrases.  We really enjoy rocking out to our silly, but helpful songs.

We have wrapped up our social studies chapter on Goods and Services.  Next week we will be starting a Science unit on Plant Life.

In Math we wrapped up our chapter on time and money.  If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to turn in your permission slip for Family Math on March 31st.  Next week we will be learning and practicing many new games.

In Religion we are talking about The Mass.  We are looking closely at each part of Mass and learning more about The Liturgy of the Word and The Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Please be sure to complete the Eucharist Book Chapter 3 next week with your child.

We are continuing to collect money for The Leukemia Foundation until the 23rd of March.  Wednesday, March 22nd is a $1 Dress where all donations go to the cause.

Week of 2-27

This week in reading we read an expository writing called Harbor Seal Pup Grows Up.  While reading we focused on sequencing skills and looking closely at words with suffixes.  We talked about idioms and how sometimes we shouldn’t take things “literally.”

In Shurley English we are stretching our sentences by adding prepositional phrases.  This week’s newsletter secret is…In like a lion out like a lamb.

Next week we will take a break from our reading series and focus on a Descriptive Writing.  We will be talking about creating an organized paragraph full of details.  Later in the year we hope to write a 3 paragraph paper that expand even more.

In Math we are continuing with counting and drawing coins.  Empty out your pockets, clean the couches, and dump out your piggy banks: lots of us need some extra practice at home!  We will be looking at telling time next week.

This week in Religion we talked about Lent.  We went to Stations of the Cross on Thursday.  We will be talking more about Stations each week to help us understand the meaning of each.  Monday, March 13th is an all school Reconciliation.  Please quiz your child on their Ten Commandments and Act of Contrition to help them better prepare.

In Social Studies we have been learning about producers and consumers.  We also talked about different methods of spending and saving money.  We will be sending home information shortly on an “At Home Project” for Social Studies.

Second-2-None: Week of February 20, 2017

It seems to happen so quickly, but we’re already talking about First Holy Communion. We started this with a discussion of what is Mass and the importance of the Last Supper. Next week, we’ll continue our study of Mass, while we also talk about the next season of the church year, Lent. We will attend a Mass on Wednesday to celebrate Ash Wednesday, as well as attend the Stations of the Cross every Thursday. During this time, we’ll reflect on our Lord’s journey to the cross.

In Math it’s all about the money. We’re looking at counting coins, sorting them, etc. Please give your child some real coins to look at and practice counting. We continue with money next week, and then move on to telling time.

In Social Studies, we are studying goods and services, discussing the differences. Also, they are learning about income and tax. It was a great discussion when tax was brought up, very insightful.

Throughout our language block, we do so much. They are classifying sentences with prepositions and object of the prepositions. They are identifying various vowel sounds, defining words with prefixes, and reading floor maps. We read a really fun story called “Officer Buckle and Gloria” that helped us realize the importance of illustrations in some stories. We looked at cause and effect. It’s been a great week of learning and hard work.

This week, we also read a book “The Invisible Boy” and talked about including others, using kind words, and looking out for one another. The class was partnered up with someone to make a kindness card, telling the person some kind things about them. They really seemed to enjoy doing this for one another and then sharing their cards with each other. Newsletter secret message is … Be kind! Have a great weekend!

Second-2-None Newsletter 2-13

What We Are Learning

Week of 2-13

This week in Reading we read a folktale Head, Body, Legs.  While reading we thought about cause and effect.  We also looked as the suffixes s and es.  Next week we will not be reading a new story.  We are going to be focusing on a formal paragraph.  We will learn more about indenting and focus on organizing our thoughts in paragraph form.

In grammar we learned 2 new songs about prepositions and object of the preposition.  We will be classifying sentences with these 2 new skills for a few weeks.  We learned that when we write an object of the preposition in our sentences we are adding another noun.

We finished chapter 6 in math this week.  Next week we will be talking about money.  Some of this will be a review since money has been covered a bit in our Simple Solutions.

Our Animal Unit in Science has come to an end.  We really seemed to have learned a lot about classifying different animals by their characteristics.  Next week we will put Science on hold while we start a Social Studies unit on Goods and Services.

In Religion we have been talking about The Last Supper.  We discussed Jesus’ actions and words during the Last Supper.  Next week is the Eucharist Parent Meeting.  Please be sure to attend on Tuesday, February 21st.  First Communion Mass Sign Up begins at 6:30 in Morrissey Hall.  We will be sending home the Family Eucharist books next week as well.

This week we were very lucky to have Ms. Matthews (our school counselor) come and talk to us a bit about bullying.  She read a story called One and helped us think about how what we say to our peers can really affect how they feel about themselves.  Ask your child about MAX, our paper friend, who was bullied.  He is hanging in both classrooms.  This week’s newsletter secret is Treat others as you want to be treated.

Second-2-None Newsletter 2-6

What We Are Learning

Week of 2-6

This week in reading we completed our unit test.

In grammar we wrapped up chapter 5 by finding simple and complete subjects and predicates.  Next week we will be learning two new songs about prepositions and object of the preposition.  Now we will have sentences with more than one noun.

Math’s chapter 6 continues with subtraction of 3 digit numbers. Next week we will learn how to regroup with a zero in the tens place.  Our chapter will be wrapping up towards the end of next week. This week’s newsletter secret is Happy Valentine’s Day.

In science we are reading all about animals and classifying them by their characteristics.  Both classes will be taking their test next week. Room 109 will be taking their test on Thursday and Room 110 will have their test on Friday.

Now that Reconciliation has passed we will begin learning about the Eucharist.  Next week we will be reading about The Last Supper.  Both classes will be tested on their 10 Commandments next week.  Room 110 will also have an Act of Contrition quiz.  Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, February 21st at 7 PM (6:30 Mass sign up) for our parent First Communion meeting in Morrissey Hall.
